NHL player is being investigated over his alleged sexual misconduct at age 16
A former NHL player has been charged with sexually assaulting an underage girl while she was at a camp for youth hockey players in British Columbia.NHL.com’s Chris Johnston reports the 24-year-old, who is currently playing for the New Jersey Devils, faces a charge of sexual assault and two counts of voyeurism in the first degree.
Johnston reported on Wednesday that the woman was 18 at the time and that the incident occurred at a campsite at the National Park Service Youth Hockey Centre in Kamloops, British Columbia, in January 2018.
The suspect, who was arrested on Feb. 8 and is in custody in British Colombia, was arrested in May, Johnston said.
Johnston said the suspect was a former player with the Los Angeles Kings.NRL.com/Sports is reporting that the accused was a player in the NHL and was “in the prime of his career.”
He was in the United States from January 2020 through February 2021 and was on his way to the start of training camp in 2018, Johnston reported.
N.J. law firm alleges that the alleged victim was under the influence of alcohol when the alleged attack took place.
The accuser was 14 when the assault occurred, according to the Los Feliz Herald.
The case was first reported by the British Columbia Police Department and the NHL.
The alleged victim has since graduated from high school.
The alleged victim, who has not been identified by police, told police she was on her way to school with her friend to participate in a “camp” when she was approached by a male at the campsite, Johnston wrote.
The accuser said the man grabbed her from behind, and she told him she had to move, Johnston writes.
The victim told police the accused told her that he wanted to make out with her and that he knew she was under 18, Johnston added.
The victim said she complied and then the alleged attacker raped her.
She told police that the suspect had to stop because he was “not sure what to do,” Johnston wrote in the report.
She told police he made her lie down on the ground on her stomach, Johnston adds.
The accused also reportedly placed a blanket over her head and forced her to touch herself.
The woman said she told the accused he had to leave the area but he continued the attack on her.
He also allegedly forced her onto the floor, Johnston reports.
The accused was charged with two counts each of sexual interference and sexual assault, Johnston stated.
